New Years resolutions or Lifestyle commitment

I’m not a big fan of new years resolutions. The top two resolutions are #1, lose weight/eat healthier and #2 is life and self-improvement. Sadly statistics say that on average Americans keep their new years resolutions for three and half weeks or 24 days.

I do believe that the new year is a great time to access yourself. Review your accomplishments and short comings over the past year. It’s the time to review your long-term goals make course correction to your plan of action to achieve your goals. If you desire to do more, be more, and achieve more you have got to have your goals written down on paper and devise your plan to achieve them.

Make a lifestyle commitment

The great Jim Rohn said “to have more than you’ve got, you’ve got to become more than you are”. You, you have to put the work in to become more than you are. You become more than you are now by making a lifestyle commitment, not a new years resolution. Change and improvement comes when you commit to life long personal development and learning, when you commit to making small consistent steps each day towards your goals. You must constantly review your action plan adapting and adjusting your path to success.

Challenge yourself to make a lifestyle commitment, decide what you want to be right now and then act as if it is done. I heard an interview with Terry Crews talking about this, here’s an example. Decide you are fit and healthy, even if you are not at your desired weight. When you reach for something you know you shouldn’t eat, ask your self, would a healthy fit person eat this?

I used this technique myself regarding my first book. In the real world there was no way I was supposed to be an author. I’ve never written anything, wasn’t a great student, heck I’m a terrible speller. But I knew I had a story I wanted to share with the world. So I wrote and re-wrote for 5 years. Really what I was doing was procrastinating because in the back of my mind I didn’t believe I was or could be an author. Finally I just asked myself, what would an author do, he would publish his damn book! I decided the time would never be right, the book would never be right, but I have a story to tell and I am the AUTHOR of this story. So I published the book. As of this writing my book, Faith through Adversity is number 1 in its category of new releases.

Decide what you want to do, decide what you want to achieve, write your plan out and then make a lifestyle commitment to make your dreams come true. Be the example to others.
